OUR US ROADTRIP PT 1 – SAN FRANCISCO (+ my SF recommendations!)

Sean and I landed in San Francisco exactly a month ago. I guess most of you remember the furious forest fires in California at that time?
The thick, white smoke and strange chemical smell filling in the air outside the airport entrance gave a very surreal atmosphere. As if the plane had landed in one of the dystopian movies we’ve watched on Netflix instead of in SF.

When we finally got to our Airbnb in Castro (our host was a very talkative guy who just like everyone else we met in SF, was working in “tech”), we made the classic mistake of giving in to the jet lag. We slept like babies long before the sun had gone down.

4 in the morning, our confused bodies thought it was time to get up, so we did.
We soon realized that it wasn’t morning fog covering the city, the smoky air had far worse values than big cities in China. The first thing we bought on the trip was two face masks.

The public transport was free because of the bad air. We took the bus down to the harbor, Embacadero, up to Lombard Street (not the most exciting tourist attraction I’ve seen haha).

In the afternoon we strolled along Polk street, went to vintage stores and looked at people. ReLove is a small shop by the junction Lombard/Washington Street filled with really cool, but still cheap, pieces.
Here I am (looking VERY anonymous haha) in the line to Swan’s oyster depot (apparently there’s a line for all good restaurants in SF). Anyway, after several hours of strolling, our bodies deserved oysters and crab salad. Let’s just say it was worth the wait.

The streets were almost completely abandoned, aside from a few people hurrying between buildings with air filters. Despite the strange atmosphere, I was excited because we were on our way to…

see this cute face again!! Nacha left Europe last autumn to live with her boyfriend in San Francisco some months. This was partly the reason why I persuaded Sean to go on a roadtrip in Cali at that time, to get to see her again. We went to de Young Museum and then to a bar.

God morgon solen!

Another extremely early morning! We went up as soon as the darkness of the night disappeared from the streets.

Haha, tired but 100% cute (we drank huge amounts of kombucha during our month in the us, the range and prices are so so much better in cali than in Europe)

We learned quite quickly to share all the big portions to avoid aching stomaches, haha.

We spent a whole day discovering Mission. It’s a messy but exciting area where art, hipsterz and cool cafes are mixed with hundreds of Mexican restaurants, and a predominantly Mexican population. I felt like home! In many ways, it reminded of areas in Berlin, where widely different cultures and nationalities can share the same neighborhoods (and, of course, there’s an ongoing discussion about gentrification).
Walking along Valencia street we found second hands, the awesome bookstore Dog Eared Books and amaaazing tacos and burritos.

In the evening we decided to explore Castro, the area we lived in that people described as “the western world’s epicenter for the modern gay movement”. Perhaps it was the uncomfortable feeling of for the first time being in minority as a hetero couple that made us leave quite fast, or the total lack of girls (almost entire Castro is gay, but just like in many other places the male gay culture is dominating the scene). However, Castro is an important part of gay history and it was really impressive to see.

The next day we went to Land’s End! After spending two days in the city it was so nice to see another part of town. One of the best things with SF is all beautiful green areas and parks.

The fog was still so thick that the view which usually would consist of the Golden Gate Bridge was just a white wall.

In the afternoon, we met Nachos and Alex again to hang out in Ashbury and have lunch at the hyped restaurant Burma Superstar (after an hour’s queuing, of course). It totally lived up to the hype!

After hanging out together a whole afternoon and evening we gave each other long “see u at Christmas”-hugs.

I was really expecting to fall in love with San Francisco, but afterwards I still have mixed feelings for the city. There were both sides I really liked but also things I didn’t.

The next day we picked up the car we had rented and started the drive to Yosemite! The feeling there and then in the car, leaving the city behind and having the adventure in front of us, that’s the best feeling I know.

PUSS!

Hope you enjoyed this incredibly long post (told you I’d tell you everything!), in the next part I’ll write all about what we did in Yosemite. KISS!

I went to San Francisco somthing like 4 years ago. It had been a dream of mine for as long as I could remember and it felt very surreal to be there, to see the Golden Gate, narrow streets and all… I totally fell in love with that city. I guess we all have different feelings about those places but I know I fell something there that I had never felt anywhere else! I’m really happy to see this long post about the city, and I can’t wait to read about the rest of your trip!

Great SF report. A little unfortunate that you were there as the forest fires were burning. đŸ˜· I like the pics as always. 👍

It’s good to see some kombucha in here. It’s a nice cold sparkling drink.
